Re: Your Freedom of Information Act Request to the Federal Election Commission FOIA No. 2020-004

Dear Ms. Jeffries,

This email concerns the request you filed for information under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) dated and received by the Federal Election Commission's (FEC) FOIA Requester Service Center on October 11, 2019. Specifically, you requested:

Copies of all emails containing the terms "Def Con" and/or "DefCon" and/or "Jeff Moss" and/or "hacking."

The FOIA requires that requests "reasonably describe" the records sought such that an agency employee familiar with the subject area of the request can locate the records with a reasonable amount of effort. See 5 U.S.C. § 552(a)(3)(A). We have determined that your request does not adequately describe the records sought, and are therefore unable to process it at this time.

Therefore, I am writing you to clarify your request to reasonably describe the records you seek. There are several ways in which you may clarify this information. For instance, by providing a date range for your request (e.g., "August 2017-the date of my request," or "January through June of 2016"). Additionally, you may clarify which offices or divisions within the FEC you would like us to search for documents within (e.g., the Public Disclosure and Media Relations Division, the Office of Inspector General, the FOIA Office, or commissioners' offices). If you need assistance identifying particular office or divisions, the FEC's Organizational Chart can be viewed at the following link on our website: https://transition.fec.gov/about/offices/offices.shtml.

If we do not receive your written response clarifying what records you are seeking within 20 working days from the date of this letter, we will assume that you are no longer interested in pursuing your request and will administratively close this request. See 43 C.F.R. § 2.5(d).

Please reference the above FOIA request number in your response and any other communications with our office. Should you need further assistance regarding this request, please contact the FOIA Requester Service Center at FOIA@fec.gov<mailto:FOIA@fec.gov> or (202) 694-1650.

Sincerely,

Patricia Washington

Please restrict the records request to:

Copies of all emails to and from FEC staff containing the terms "Def Con" and/or "DefCon" and/or "Jeff Moss" and/or "hacking" from January 1, 2014 to present. Please include the complete email exchange for each email, including any emails that are being replied to as well as any subsequent replies.

We are willing to pay up to $100 for fees.

Thank you.
