To Whom It May Concern:

Pursuant to the California Public Records Act, I hereby request the following records:

The California Department of Justice's Data Inventory as a PDF or as long- and short-form data, in a machine-readable database or spreadsheet format such as Excel, CSV, Access or SQL.

The data should include all fields in the database or spreadsheets that contain non-exempt information, including but not limited to all fields required in California's Open Data Policy (https://www.dgs.ca.gov/Resources/SAM/TOC/5100/5160-1). I also request all documentation that describes the layout of the database’s tables and fields, and that provides the definitions of any field names, codes, and abbreviations used in the database. This information may be gathered together in a single document like a data dictionary, entity layout, or user's guide. If that is the case, I request access to and copy of said document.

The requested documents will be made available to the general public, and this request is not being made for commercial purposes.

In the event that there are fees, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.

Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter. I look forward to receiving your response to this request within 10 calendar days, as the statute requires.

Sincerely,

Dillon Bergin

Hi,

Thank you for your response. Please refer to the link that I sent in my original request for a definition of a data inventory: https://www.dgs.ca.gov/Resources/SAM/TOC/5100/5160-1. These are the requirements set by California's 2019 Open Data Policy. There, the policy describes a "data inventory" as an inventory that "shall list any datasets that can be made publicly available at the Agency/state entity’s open data site or portal in a format that enables automatic aggregation by Data.ca.gov and other services (known as “harvestable files”), to the extent practicable."

For example, the city of San Francisco complied with data inventory requirement and hosts it publicly at this link: https://data.sfgov.org/City-Management-and-Ethics/Dataset-inventory/y8fp-fbf5/about_data.

Thus, to answer your point that I did not identify a dataset, that is both correct and not correct. I am not requesting just any dataset. I am requesting the dataset that catalogs all the datasets that the California Department of Justice maintains, which is called a "data inventory" and is outlined and required by the state's 2019 Open Data Policy.

Thank you for your help on this request.

My best,
Dillon
