A message was sent to you regarding record request #24-751:

Jenny,

Thanks for reaching out. We have reviewed your request and wanted to follow up with more information, as well as to get direction from you about how you'd like to proceed.

In accordance with state law and our policy and procedures regarding public access to University information (both linked below), there is a threshold of staff time beyond which time spent collecting and copying responsive records is charged to the requester.

While we are often able to search a single inbox for a select date range and keywords, conducting this search across 17 months of Dr. Urriola's inbox will put us over the threshold I mentioned above.

In order to proceed with this request, as currently written, we would need to collect a $100 deposit. Should the final cost be above or below this deposit total, we would follow up with you before releasing the data to detail any balance.

With all that said, it's also our understanding that Dr. Urriola's contributions do not generally involve the communications aspects of this work. It is quite possible that, should you pay the costs associated with collecting 17 months of data, that there will be little or no responsive data at the end of that search. We won't know for certain until we conduct a search for these records, but I wanted to be upfront about that possibility.

If you're interested in refining this search to reduce potential costs, which would primarily involve reducing the timeframe you've identified, I'd be happy to discuss that as well.

Please let us know how you'd like to proceed with this request.

Best,

Jake

I'm following up on my message from last week (June 6), in which we provided more details about our policies and processes, including a cost estimate for this request. Please be in touch as soon as you're able to let us know how you'd like to proceed with this request. If we do not hear back from you by next Tuesday (June 18), we close your request. If that were to happen, you'd be welcome to refile it at any time in the future.

Hi Jake,

Would it be possible to add emails that contain "pork trust" to the search? And then yes, we can pay the $100 deposit. Can you let me know how best to do that?

Thank you,
Jenny

Dear Jake,

I am using the Muckrock system to send a check but it appears to still be in process. Can you keep this file open for a couple more weeks until it reaches your office? Attaching a screenshot of the status.

Thank you,
Jenny

A message was sent to you regarding record request #24-751:

Jenny,

Thank you for following up. Unfortunately, the payment information you uploaded shows that payment is not made out to the correct contact and we will not be able to process it.

In my June 19 message, I shared that the check for payment must be made out to the University of Minnesota Board of Regents and marked with your request number (Ref No. 24-751). The payment you've uploaded specifically names an University employee and our Office of General Counsel. Again, we will not be able to process this payment.

We cannot keep this request open and idle for several more weeks while this payment situation is resolved. If you are willing to pay directly or can get payment sent promptly through other means, we can hold the request into next week while we wait for that payment.

If you are going to need to get the payment cancelled and reissued through Muck Rock, we will close the request and ask that you refile it once you've worked out the payment information with Muck Rock.

Best,

Jake

Hi Jake,

Question: do you have a way to pay this electronically? We're a very small news outlet and have a credit card but don't typically write checks. Alternatively, I can just try and have a new check sent through Muckrock.

Jenny,

I'm following up with good news - our controller was able to make the payment sent with the incorrect information work on our end, so we are/will be able to cash it for the deposit on this request. No need to resend payment at this time.

As this data collection continues, do you mind if we remove non-material records that may be returned, such as newsletters?

Best,

Jake
