Ms. Rosselet,

Your request is seeking the following information:

Basic information on all open cases of missing and murdered persons (including juveniles) within the state; this basic information can include but is not limited to: person name, age, DOB, incident date, case closure date, county/jurisdiction in which person was reported missing.

The MS Bureau of Investigation (MBI) does not investigate nor maintain records of every missing person and every murdered person in the State of MS. The MBI assists agencies with murder cases as requested and posts missing person notices for local agencies. Regarding posting notices of missing persons, the postings are only for missing persons the MBI is requested to post, and the closed postings only reflect the ones those agencies notify us are closed. Regarding personal identifying information (PII) for juveniles, we would not be able to provide PII for juveniles. If the information is publicly known, then it would be available from the public sources from which it was posted. Murder statistics are reported by individual agencies to the FBI UCR and is available from that source which would be obtained from their website. If you are requesting information regarding open murder investigations being investigated by the MBI, please let us know, and we will pull a list and provide you a copy of the incident report for each case which would contain the name of the person but be redacted of PII and investigative information, pursuant to state and federal statutes. The fee for redacted incident reports is $15.00/each. You will need to check with individual law enforcement agencies to obtain information on cases they are working that do not involve the MBI as we would not have that information because the individual agencies do not notify the MBI of each case.

Respectfully,
R.E. Wentworth, Legal Asst.
MS Dept. of Public Safety, Legal Dept.
