To Whom It May Concern:

Pursuant to the New York Freedom of Information Law, I hereby request the following records:

I am writing to request access to any and all records that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has on Aaron Swartz, who was a computer programmer and political activist. Mr. Swartz passed away in 2013 and was known for his work on various online projects and his advocacy for open access to information.

To aid in your search, I would like to request that an interagency search be conducted for any records related to Aaron Swartz that may be held by other government agencies. This would include but not be limited to the National Security Agency (NSA), Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), and Department of Justice (DOJ).

Please be advised that I do not consent to the withholding, redaction, or deletion of any responsive records. If any responsive records are withheld, redacted, or deleted, I will have no choice but to file an appeal or bring an action in federal court to compel their disclosure.

In support of my request, I cite the following relevant court cases:

McGehee v. Casey, 718 F.2d 1137 (D.C. Cir. 1983)
Soucie v. David, 448 F.2d 1067 (D.C. Cir. 1971)
Church of Scientology of California v. United States Department of Justice, 30 F.3d 224 (1st Cir. 1994)
ACLU of N. Cal. v. FBI, 2016 WL 1554983 (N.D. Cal. Apr. 18, 2016)
Additionally, please consider the following information:

Any files that mention or pertain to Aaron Swartz or his activities.
Any files related to investigations, interviews, or other interactions with Aaron Swartz.
Any files that refer to Aaron Swartz's involvement with internet activism, political or social causes, and/or computer programming.
Any files that relate to the events surrounding Aaron Swartz's arrest, prosecution, and death.
Any interagency communications or documents related to Aaron Swartz.
Furthermore, I request that you conduct a search of any and all electronic surveillance (ELSUR) systems that may have been used to monitor Aaron Swartz's communications or online activity.

If any responsive records are found, I request that they be provided to me in electronic format. If any responsive records are withheld, please provide a detailed explanation of the exemption(s) that justify withholding the records.

The requested documents will be made available to the general public, and this request is not being made for commercial purposes.

In the event that there are fees, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.

Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter. I look forward to receiving your response to this request within 5 business days, as the statute requires.

Sincerely,

Jordan Lassiter
