To Whom It May Concern:
Pursuant to the New York Freedom of Information Law, I hereby request the following records:
New York Police Department
FOIL Unit
1 Police Plaza, Room 110-C
New York, NY 10038
To Whom It May Concern:
Subject: Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) Request - Records of Press Credential Applications
Pursuant to the New York Freedom of Information Law, Article 6 of the Public Officers Law, I hereby request the following records:
A database or spreadsheet detailing all applications for press credentials submitted to the New York Police Department from January 1, 2010, to the present. For each application, please include:
The date of application
The name of the applicant (if not considered private information)
The media organization the applicant represented at the time of application
Whether the application was approved or denied
If denied, the reasons for the denial.
Please provide this information in a machine-readable format, such as Excel or CSV.
This request is not made for commercial purposes, but in the interest of understanding the process and criteria by which press credentials are granted or denied by the New York Police Department.
Please note that the U.S. Supreme Court in NLRB v. Robbins Tire Co., 437 U.S. 214 (1978), affirmed that the core purpose of the FOIA is to contribute to public understanding of the operations or activities of the government. Similarly, in Scott, Sardano & Pomeranz v. Records Access Officer of the City of Syracuse, 65 N.Y.2d 294 (1985), the New York Court of Appeals emphasized the public's right to access records under the New York FOIL.
The requested documents will be made available to the general public, and this request is not being made for commercial purposes.
In the event that there are fees, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.
Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter. I look forward to receiving your response to this request within 5 business days, as the statute requires.
Sincerely,
Jordan Lassiter
