Communications
From: Judith Lewis
To Whom It May Concern:
Pursuant to the California Public Records Act, I hereby request the following records:
I am requesting evidence, in the form of maps, documents, interagency communication, emails, internal memos and other written records of any oil spills CDFW has assessed for harm to wildlife from 2009 to the present. Such communications may be between CDFW and the California Department of Conservation/Division of Oil, Gas, and Geothermal Resources; between CDFW and environmental nonprofit organizations and/or between CDFW and individuals in the oil industry.
The requested documents will be made available to the general public, and this request is not being made for commercial purposes.
In the event that there are fees, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.
Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter. I look forward to receiving your response to this request within 10 calendar days, as the statute requires.
Sincerely,
Judith Lewis

Dear Ms. Lewis,
We have received your Public Records Act request and are processing it now. You should receive an initial letter from us soon that will include the name of the attorney assigned to this request, as well as other information.
As a preliminary matter, I wanted to ask you to clarify the scope of your request. The subject line of your email was: "California Public Records Act Request: Oil Spills in Kern County, California, 2009 to present." In the body of the email below, however, the request is not expressly limited to Kern County and could be construed to apply statewide. Based on the subject line, we are interpreting your request to be limited to records pertaining to oil spills in Kern County. Is this correct?
Thank you for your assistance,
Steve
