Dear Mr. Meadors:
This is in response to your November 17, 2024 Freedom of Information Act
(FOIA) request for copies of all correspondence between the U.S. and
Israeli governments related to the December 1980 payment of $6,000,000 as
compensation for damage to the USS Liberty caused by the June 8, 1967
attack on the ship by Israel Defense Force jet fighters and torpedo boats.
Your FOIA request was received by my office on November 20, 2024 and
assigned tracking number 25-09771.

we were not able to locate pertinent correspondence between the governments
of the United States and Israel.
Given that the State Department central file records dating from January 1,
1980 have not yet been accessioned to the National Archives for preservation,
it is possible that the correspondence you seek remains in the custody of
the Department of State. Access to those records may be requested
by contacting the Department of State FOIA Office at:
https://foia.state.gov/Contact/Default.aspx
If the Department of State transferred series to the National Archives that
include relevant records, please ask them to provide an accession or
transfer number.
We do not consider this a denial of your FOIA request. However, if you are
not satisfied with our actions, your options for appeal and dispute
resolution are outlined in the attachment.
This concludes the processing of your FOIA request by the National Archives.
