From: William Green
To Whom It May Concern:
This is a request under the Freedom of Information Act. I hereby request the following records:
records detailing the number of mail cover surveillance requests made annually since 2001 by the Drug Enforcement Administration. I am requesting that the data be broken down year by year from 2001 to 2014 up to the receipt of this letter.
I am referring to the type of requests as described in Inspector General David William's audit entitled "Postal Inspection Service Mail Covers Program," released May 28, 2014, and reported by both Politico (http://www.politico.com/story/2014/06/snail-mail-snooping-safeguards-not-followed-108056.html, "Snail mail snooping safeguards not followed," June 19, 2014)
and the New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com/2014/10/28/us/us-secretly-monitoring-mail-of-thousands.html?_r=0, "Report Reveals Wider Tracking of Mail in U.S.," October 27, 2014).
I also request that, if appropriate, fees be waived as I believe this request is in the public interest. The requested documents will be made available to the general public free of charge as part of the public information service at MuckRock.com, processed by a representative of the news media/press and is made in the process of news gathering and not for commercial usage.
In the event that fees cannot be waived, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.
Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter. I look forward to receiving your response to this request within 20 business days, as the statute requires.
Sincerely,
William Green
