To Whom It May Concern:

Pursuant to the Freedom of Information Act, I hereby request the following records:

I have learned from several sources that Mr Richard Helms (Director CIA) visited Australia (3-8 July, 1972) and New Zealand (8-11 1972). I have obtained many details about these visits, but still lack crucial detail to enable me to establish the purpose(s) of these visits. I do not know which documents in the CIA archives to request; but my questions are as follows:-
(i) Mr Helms was accompanied on these visits by his wife and a small number of staff (4 in number I believe). Is there any information of who these four individuals were, or what positions they held? Who were they?
(ii) Did these four include any individual with financial responsibility for whatever business was discussed or transacted during these visits?
(iii) On what earlier date was the decision made that Mr Helms should make this visit?
(iv) During the period July-August 1972, where was Mr Sidney Gottlieb, Head of the Technical Services Division?
(v) Did Mr Gottlieb make any overseas visits during this period? Did he visit Sydney (Australia). Did any deputy to Mr Gottlieb visit Sydney?
(vi) If such a visit did occur, what were the dates of travel (arrival in, and departure from Sydney)
(vii) If such a visit did occur, on what date was the decision made that Mr Gottlieb (or one of his deputies) should make this visit?

The requested documents will be made available to the general public, and this request is not being made for commercial purposes.

In the event that there are fees, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.

Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter. I look forward to receiving your response to this request within 20 business days, as the statute requires.

Sincerely,

Robert Miller
