We’re requesting documents about the presidential transition

Edited by Samantha Sunne

Before Election Day, we asked our readers a question: What presidential transition materials do you want us to request? They responded, asking for documents like exit ethics briefings, transition materials and more information on security clearances for Trump appointees.

MuckRock journalists, with the help of Data Liberation Project volunteers, have gone through all the responses and started making requests to agencies, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the FBI and more.

So far, we’ve already received the presidential transition briefing book from the National Archives and Records Administration. The National Archives’ briefing book includes an outline of potential briefing topics like the Presidential Records Act or the handling presidential gifts, as well as an overview of the agency’s budget challenges, which include preparing for an influx of tourism on 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and improving the agency’s cybersecurity.

If you want to follow along with this project, we’ve created a new project page for the 2024 presidential transition where you can find all our requests in one place. We’ll also be adding all documents to DocumentCloud. To keep tabs on a single request, you can go to the individual request page and hit the ‘follow’ button.

If you’re a newsroom working on post-election coverage, or working on your own presidential transition requests, let us know at news@muckrock.com. MuckRock’s editorial team can offer training and support.
