MuckRock wants you to share your pretty baby pupper photos with us as we embark on a new phase of one of our longest-running beats: nationwide dog and pet names and breeds.

MuckRock’s been requesting registered dog data from towns across the country. In honor of National Dog Day, we took a peek at the prevalence of puppies in our home town.

As a little experiment in transparency, MuckRock set out to file for pet licensing data for the most populous city in each state. After waiting a month for Wichita, Kansas and 11 days for Minneapolis, Minnesota we expected to find purr-fectly aligned rows and columns filled with dog names - instead, the cat overlords struck again, and we were met with a combined fee of over $100. You cat to be kitten me.

The response from Jacksonville, Florida will have you wondering whether or not the state statutes are really protecting their citizen’s privacy, or - the more logical conclusion - serving the whims of their cat overlords.
