Elections 2024

As newsrooms worked to cover local and national issues and candidates in the 2024 elections, MuckRock was actively supporting them. We provided extensive training and support for journalists and the public to help cover federal, state and local races across the country. MuckRock worked on public records requests, along with Sunlight Research Center, to better understand political candidates.

Knight Election Hub

MuckRock partnered with the Knight Election integrity project to build and host the Knight Election Hub, which provided an extensive catalog of essential resources to U.S. newsrooms to cover the 2024 election and the critical period between Election Day and the inauguration.

Working in collaboration with OpenNews and Hearken, the Knight Election Hub matched newsrooms with election-related support services in a range of focus areas.

Candidate Accountability Training

MuckRock collaborated with the Sunlight Research Center to offer workshops for reporters on the art of backgrounding candidates for public office.

With support from the Jonathan Family Foundation, MuckRock and Sunlight Research Center were able to train over 40 newsrooms on the art of candidate backgrounding. Those candidate accountability workshops equipped participating reporters with tools designed to bring a candidate’s history into focus, and illuminate their professional, personal and political backgrounds. The Knight Foundation provided support for additional workshops through their Election Integrity Project. Arizona Luminaria joined that workshop series – read more about how they covered local elections.

And through MuckRock’s open, public FOIA Friday series MuckRock and Sunlight Research offered additional candidate research training to the general public.
