Pursuant to the Illinois Freedom of Information Act (5 ILCS 140/1 to 11), I hereby request the following records:
Any emails sent or received by any employee of the Chicago Police Department (CPD) between the dates of April 01, 2016 and November 01, 2016 containing the keyword/hashtag "#NoDAPL" or "#DAPL".
The requested documents will be made available to the general public, and this request is not being made for commercial purposes.
In the event that there are fees, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not. I would also like to request that the responsive documents/data be provided in a machine readable format or in the original format it was created in, with all original metadata of documents/data intact.
Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter. I look forward to receiving your response to this request within 5 business days, as the statute requires.

Since the department has determined that this request will take quite some to compile, and deemed it unduly burdensome will you advise if I may narrow the scope of the request as it stands now so that you may fulfill it. If so, I would like to narrow the scope of the request to provide the email account names, email addresses of the sender(s) and recipient(s) including CC and BCC fields, date, time and subject lines of the 3,294 emails in an excel spreadsheet format?

Dear Mr. Kroll:
The Chicago Police Department (CPD) is in receipt of your Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request seeking:
"Any emails sent or received by any employee of the Chicago Police Department (CPD) between the dates of April 01, 2016 and November 01, 2016 containing the keyword/hashtag "#NoDAPL" or "#DAPL".
A response will be mailed to you on or before March 1, 2017 regarding your "narrowed search request" since we have two sets of data to review and redact and prepare a response letter.
However, I have two (2) sets from the narrowing of your request. Set 1 has 47 pages and will work to complete and the second set, Set 2 includes 918 pages.
I am working on your FOIA and I will be able to complete Set 1 since a reasonable request after your initial narrowing. I am reading thru these emails and redacting to complete your request. However, Set 2 is still considered burdensome similar to the original response I sent you.
Please confirm the time extension as I will be able to complete your request on the further narrowing to include Set 1.
