Pursuant to the Rhode Island Access to Public Records Act ("APRA"), I hereby request the following records:
A copy of the police log for the past week (7 days).
I also request that, if appropriate, fees be waived as I believe this request is in the public interest. The requested documents will be made available to the general public free of charge as part of the public information service at MuckRock.com, processed by a representative of the news media/press and is made in the process of news gathering and not for commercial usage.
In the event that fees cannot be waived, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.
Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter. I look forward to receiving your response to this request within 10 business days, as the statute requires.

Good morning Shawn,
I have received your Public Records request. In an effort to process and
fulfill your request, I would like more specific information as to what you
are looking for. For example, do you require only a summary with the total
number of calls responded with the time frame desired? Are there only
specific types of calls you need? For example, removing any Animal Control
calls-for-service from this request.
Additionally, I have attached our RI public record fees and exemptions. As
stated in the attached, there is a cost incurred for search and retrieval
for a specific request.
If you prefer to call me, the Records Department number is listed below so I
may respond to your request in a timely manner. I am available from 8-12

Hi Shawn,
I would like to clarify before starting your request. In quickly looking at
our dispatch log from 4/30 to 5/7 (date of request), I saw approximately 566
entries or records with 153 pages to be printed at .15 per page. I estimate
at least four hours to review all records to ensure that they are public
record with an estimated cost at $15.00/hour first hour free. I shall start
as soon as you confirm your desire for them at an estimated cost of $ 67.95.
Before processing this request, we would need to receive the estimate fee.

Hello,
It is my understanding of APRA that government agencies must release documents in requested format unless doing so would be unduly burdensome. As a number of departments have released digital copies of their dispatch logs, I do not think it is necessarily the case that doing so is burdensome, depending on the software your department uses.
Furthermore, several departments have released the requested dispatch log without any review or redaction whatsoever, and at no charge.
Please confirm whether you are able to release the requested logs in digital form, as requested, and provide a cost estimate if you determine that fees will be charged.

first print them to review and redact. The estimated cost to provide this

Hi Terri -
Again, I would point to a number of other departments that fulfilled this request without any costly review or printing necessary. No other department so far has indicated that documents must first be printed to review and then sent digitally, and the cost you've quoted is considerably higher than most other departments have provided.
I respectfully ask once again whether this print and review step is necessary -- if not, please release the documents in digital form at your earliest convenience per your obligations under APRA.
