From: Greg Buhl

To Whom It May Concern (Likely City Attorney's Office):

Pursuant to the California Public Records Act I am requesting the following records:

-Documents sufficient to show all legal settlements or payments ordered by legal authorities paid made to LBPD officers or employees. Ideally, you already have a spreadsheet of this data, as you do with payouts made due to officer misconduct. If not, and if you do not wish to compile one, I am in the alternative requesting documents sufficient to show all payments made, whether it be cancelled checks, settlement agreements, legal judgments, or other documents in the City’s possession.

Please go as far back as the LBPD Lobstergate scandal if you could.

Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter in the time frame set out in the CPRA.

Hi Mr. Buhl,
To clarify, the September 16th date was the date by which we were required to respond to say whether records exist. I have not received records from the City Attorney's Office yet but just sent them a message to ask them to provide the records to me ASAP.
Thanks,
Megan Felix

RE: Public Records Request Reference Number: C012032-082221
Hi, Mr. Buhl,
I am so sorry for the severe undue delay in our processing of your PRAs. I've finally gotten a temp to help me work through our huge backlog of requests, and we're going through the one's that you have submitted with us on the City side (non-PD). For this request, the City Attorney's Office would like to know if you're seeking workers' comp or property damage records. I was under the impression that you were seeking neither of those but instead settlement agreements or other similar types of payouts. Please let me know and I'll pass along your response to their office.
Thank you,
Megan Felix

Correct, settlements and other similar payouts is an accurate read. The city attorney's office once made such a spread sheet available, but when I requested an updated one they said they no longer maintained the information.

Here's the back and forth with them that lead to this request. Surely someone must know how much the city pays out to settle claims against the LBPD.

Hi, Mr. Buhl,
Got your message, viewed the Breaking Down the LBPD Litigation Data article, found the previous spreadsheet there on the Muckrock site. Will forward all to City Attorney so they can see what you're wanting.
Best,
Megan Felix
